MANILA SOUTH CEMETERY

I.
HISTORY:

 Name given - The name “ South Cemetery” was given to the new cemetery for southern part of the city of manila, opened at San Pedro, Makati, Rizal Province in the year 1925.

Legally Acquired – The South cemetery was legally acquired pursuant to ordinance 726 and other action taken by the Municipal Board and Mayor Zobel vs. City of Manila (1925) 47 phil.,169.

Total Capacity – South cemetery has a total capacity of 52,234 graves Estimated total no of cadaver buried – 266,170 as of June 30, 2007

Philosophy of Public Service:

To serve is to think positively, progressively and to work hard in union with the people of our community to achieve our vision to make the City of Manila.

A TRANSFORMED SOCIETY  

Where everyone is given the opportunity to live a life of dignity and noble living where Godly and humanitarian values permeate all systems of its Government.

It is in this light that the Manila South Cemetery envisions itself to be a part of this transformation by wholeheartedly involving itself in the task to make itself eventually grow into a beautiful, sophisticated world-class memorial park not only providing a descent burial place for the dead but most important of all – to promote ecological and cultural awareness and appreciation of beauty and nature in order to enhance the aesthetic, intellectual and spiritual development of Manila Citizens.

IV.
This process should be manifested in the atmosphere of:

  • TRUST… in the integrity, wisdom and ability to our leaders to attain these noble goals.
  • CONCERN… for maintaining the cleanliness and beautification of the Manila South Cemetery.
  • SERVICE… to be rendered selflessly and without prejudice especially to those who are poor and needy.

V.
The basic foundation of our goals is to make the Manila South Cemetery a beautiful memorial park for the people of Manila from whom the city of Manila receives its power.

  • ALL FOR THE LEGACY OF THE PEOPLE OF MANILA
  • ALL IS INTENDED TO SERVE THE PEOPLE OF MANILA
  • ALL IS FOR MAKING MANILA SOUTH CEMETERY A BEAUTIFUL PLACE TO LAY OUR DEAR DEPARTED ONES TO REST; AND A TRULY SPECIAL PLACE FOR LEISURE, PLAY AND RECREATION FOR THE LIVING.

V I S I O N

THE TRANSFORMATION OF THE MANILA SOUTH CEMETERY INTO A BEAUTIFUL MEMORIAL PARK GROWING AND DEVELOPING AS PART OF THE MASTER PLAN TO MAKE THE CITY OF MANILA A TRULY SPECIAL PLACE TO LIVE, WORK AND PLAY- IN LINE WITH THE GOALS OF ITS GOVERNMENT TO PROMOTE, PEACE, ORDER AND ECONOMIC PROSPERITY.

 

M I S S I O N

WE, IN THE MANILA SOUTH CEMETERY COMMIT OURSELVES TO ITS TRANSFORMATION AS A MEMORIAL PARK DEDICATED TO THE PEOPLE OF MANILA NOT ONLY AS AN ULTIMATE DESTINATION OF THE DEPARTED BUT ALSO TO THE BEUTIFICATION OF THE ENTIRE METROPOLIS IN THE LOCAL, NATIONAL AND GLOBAL CONTEXT.

 

 VI.
HIGHLIGHTS OF ACCOMPLISHMENT FOR 2008

  • Demolition of shanties illegally constructed inside Manila South Cemetery Compound which have existed for almost 30 years.
  • Eviction of informal settlers.
  • Clearing of garbage and the cutting of weeds in the surroundings.
  • Demolition of benches illegally constructed along pathways leading to different sections of the Manila South Cemetery.
  • Asphalt-laying on the cleared pathways.
  • Restoration of peace and order.

 

GOALS / OBJECTIVES FOR 2008  

  • Relocation of Haven for the angels
  • Renovation of Chapel
  • Rehabilitation of paupers burial ground
  • Rehabilitation of ruined and abandoned sections in the Manila South Cemetery
  • Repair of Perimeter wall and installation of barbed wire to prevent the entry of informal settlers / thieves at night
