MANILA COMMEMORATES 147 BIRTH ANNIVERSARY OF ANDRES BONIFACIO: Manila Mayor Alfredo S. Lim exhorted the students and youth in the audience to emulate the shining example of Bonifacio who showed that poverty is not an obstacle to greatness. He reminded public servants to work for the country with zeal and honesty. Honor Guards from the Philippine Navy led by Lt. Commander Efren Madlangbayan assisted in the wreath-laying ceremonies. The Manila Historical & Heritage Commission presented “Mga Bandila ng Katipunan at Rebolusyon” which described the flags of the Katipunan, the Magdiwang and Magdalo, and the command banners of various Generals who fought for our Independence and were members of Bonifacio’s Katipunan. 109TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE ARRIVAL OF THE THOMASITES COMMEMORATED: U.S. Ambassador Harry K. Thomas Jr. lauded Manila Mayor Alfredo S. Lim for the significant support he provides for education through the establishment of colleges, schools and daycare centers that offer free education for those who have less in life. At the commemoration of the 109th anniversary of the arrival of the Thomasites held at the Manila North Cemetery, Thomas cited Lim’s concern for education and said: “We commend him and others like him,” at the same time announcing that the U.S. government is committed in finding ways to be of help to problems facing education in the country, such as classroom shortages. For his part, Lim, speaking before the crowd that included students and school officials, as well as city officials led by city administrator Jay Marzan, chief of staff and media bureau chief Ric de Guzman and fourth district Councilor Eduardo Quintos XVI and Dr. Ambeth Ocampo, chair of the National Historical Commission, said the commemorative activities are the city’s way of showing its gratitude for what the Thomasites have done for Filipinos. NAME THAT FAWN: MANILA Mayor Alfredo S. Lim yesterday launched a city-wide “name that fawn” contest for a rare offspring of a zebra and a horse born at the Manila Zoo recently. Lim said the rare development is an added attraction that will lure more visitors to the zoo. He personally went to the zoo to take a look at the rare product of zebra and horse’s interbreeding. Parks and recreation bureau chief Deng Manimbo said the father of the fawn is a white native horse bullied by other horses at the stable. Lim yesterday accompanied President Benigno Aquino in visiting the 332 families from Isla Puting Bato and Parola in Tondo affected by typhoon “Basyang.” Lim said Manilans are lucky to have a President who truly cares for them. The typhoon victims were evacuated at the Del Pan Complex. The President and the mayor were assisted by Social Welfare and Development Secretary Dinky Soliman and city social welfare chief Jay dela Fuente in giving away relief goods, clothes and blankets. Manila Mayor Alfredo S. Lim led the distribution of relief goods to 177 familes victims of typhoon "Basyang" in Baseco Compound, Tondo. From the typhoon victims, Lim, De Guzman and Dela Fuente also visited the 135 families whose houses were razed by a fire in Lerma, Sampaloc.
The residents camped out along the said street following the fire rummaging for things they can still salvage or beginning to build their houses anew.

LIM DESTROYS GAMBLING MACHINES: Lim destroys some 100 units of video karera machines, fruit games and color game boards which usually lure youngsters into gambling. Mayor Lim directed social welfare department chief Jay dela Fuente to spearhead a renewed campaign against all forms of illegal gambling in the city, especially those to which minors have ready access and to coordinate closely with the new Manila Police District (MPD) Director, Senior Supt. Alex Gutierrez to ensure the success of the campaign. Lim said his office is being swamped with complaints from concerned parents, teachers and residents regarding the proliferation of illegal gambling activities where even minors are given access. Lim yesterday called on the councilors that comprise the new city council to take their newly-received mandate as a challenge to give their all for the upliftment of the life of their constituents who voted them into office.
